Navigate MSU’s academic approval process with confidence. OPDM helps you understand requirements, prepare documentation, and align your program with institutional expectations so you can move from idea to launch efficiently.
Academic program approval at MSU follows a structured, multi-stage process coordinated by the Office of Accreditation, Assessment, Curriculum and Compliance (AACC). You lead the academic vision, while AACC ensures alignment with governance, policy, and registrar systems. The process moves from concept and feasibility review through formal approvals, external review when required, and final catalog implementation.
Start with a one-on-one conversation to map out your program's approval pathway and identify potential challenges before you begin.
The PRC Blueprint is your first formal milestone. Get hands-on support compiling the documentation and checklists you need to submit.
Need help at any stage of the process? OPDM can step in to keep your program moving forward.
Begin with the Provost Review Committee (PRC) Blueprint. You will complete the Request for New Academic Program with supporting checklists and worksheets. This step evaluates feasibility, including:
The goal is readiness for governance review, not approval.
After PRC review, the Provost evaluates your proposal and determines whether it moves forward. This includes consultation with your dean and planning and budget offices. Your program must align with institutional priorities, and any new funding must be included in your college’s annual planning process.
The University Committee on Curriculum (UCC) provides formal academic approval. UCC subcommittees review your program’s curriculum structure and degree requirements. This step ensures academic rigor and consistency across the university before your program can advance to final approvals.
Some programs require additional review beyond MSU. Select proposals undergo statewide review through the Michigan Association of State Universities (MASU). Programs that meet accreditation thresholds must be approved by the Higher Learning Commission (HLC). These steps can extend timelines and should be planned early.
Once approved, your program is entered into the Academic Programs system and published in the MSU catalog. Updates occur throughout the academic year. At this stage, your program is eligible for enrollment and ready for full implementation.
How long does it take for a program to go through academic approval? Plan for approximately four to five months for approval, not including summer or holiday gaps. Submit by Jan. 1 for fall launch and Sept. 1 for spring or summer. Delays in consultation or documentation can extend your timeline.
All program requests are submitted through the Registrar’s Online Forms system. Required materials include the Request for New Academic Program form, PRC Blueprint, and supporting checklists and worksheets. Using these tools early helps avoid delays and rework.
