Director

Gerald (Jerry) Rhead (he/him) works at the intersection of academic entrepreneurship, innovation, and learner-centered design. As Director for Program Development and Management (OPDM) at Michigan State University’s Academic Development and Innovation, Jerry leads efforts to conceptualize, develop, and launch forward-looking educational initiatives that expand access, engage diverse learners, and translate ideas into impactful learning experiences.

An experienced academic entrepreneur and idea-to-reality facilitator, Jerry specializes in guiding faculty, staff, and partners from early-stage concepts through implementation. Grounded in human-centered and inclusive design practices, Jerry brings a collaborative and inquiry-driven approach to uncovering opportunities, aligning stakeholders, and charting actionable pathways forward. Those seeking to design new programs, reimagine existing offerings, or reach emerging learner populations will benefit from Jerry’s ability to turn vision into execution.

In his role, Jerry works across institutional and community contexts to foster innovation that is both strategic and responsive to evolving educational needs. He is particularly passionate about creating learner-centered environments that prioritize accessibility, relevance, and real-world impact.

Beyond his professional responsibilities, Jerry is deeply committed to community engagement and youth development. He has been recognized by the City of East Lansing with a Crystal Award for more than 20 years of coaching youth baseball and basketball. He is also a recipient of the National University Technology Network’s J.O. Grantham Award, recognizing his leadership and service in online and continuing education.

Jerry earned a master's in educational administration from Western Michigan University as well as a BS in Advertising and Public Relations from Ferris State University.
